here are a few thoughts and comments about purchasing a table and chair set. they don't just relate to our products, they are more general. if you have any points that we could include in further updates of this section please email them to care@edgeoftheocean.com

1		deciding on the length of your table

a general “rule of principle” is that each person that sits at your table will require a width space of about 60cm. of course if pavarotti is dining with you...

2		space around the table

if possible, the table should be positioned with about 80cm worth of space behind it so that diners have easy access and have space to “sit back” when their meal is completed.

3		help visualise your room with our furniture

recreate the size of the table you wish to order by placing the pages of a newspaper on the floor in the area where the furniture will be situated.

4		height of tables

generally we manufacture to a height of 76cm or thereabouts. tables can be made to any height you wish so if you are short - or tall - and would like a table customised... just let us know.

5		chairs or carvers?

if you are thinking to complete your dining set with carvers (arm chairs) instead of regular dining chairs, bear in mind that the chair arms do not always fit under the table and therefore more space is required. for compact spaces a set without carvers is more practical because all the chairs fit under the table, one side against wall if necessary.

6		benches

we are finding that more and more people are buying benches to accompany their tables. this can be a very cost effective way of providing seating for a number of people. if space is a premium, we can make the benches to fit under the table, out of the way when it is not in use. a scandinavian trend: two benches together to make a large coffee table. we make benches to whatever size you need...

7		care of your furniture

all of our furniture is coated with a durable coat of clear matt lacquer. this produces a natural, polished effect and for easy maintenance requires a wipe with a damp cloth followed by buffing with a dry one. the following points are also relevant...

8		general care of your hardwood furniture

this advice relates to all hardwood furniture, (maple, beech, aak, cherry, etc.) not only to that manufactured by edge of the ocean... • to preserve the appearance it is important that all liquid spillages are wiped up immediately. • ornaments, lamps, etc. which are placed upon a surface need to be moved regularly to avoid shading.ideally dining tables should be left fully extended for the first few months to avoid uneven shading. • furniture will endure most temperatures in the modern home. however, your furniture should be positioned as far away from radiators, air conditioning units, or other direct sources of heat. • to avoid “ring marks”, quality table mats and cloths should always be used. take care that no area of mug, cup, plate or dish base overhangs the table mat. • when writing, a protective mat should be used to protect the surface from marking. • tables should not be used for sitting or standing on.
